Why are work based placements important?

Work-based placements let you take what you’ve learned in the classroom and apply it in real-world settings, helping you to connect theory with practice.

Placements are a fantastic chance to boost employability by gaining practical experience, learning sector-specific skills and growing your professional network. You can also explore different roles within the sector to help you figure out which path might be right for you. Employers benefit from your fresh ideas, energy and up-to-date knowledge while you can gain valuable career experience, making work placements a win-win.

CIMSPA work-based placement guidance

CIMSPA have developed work-based placement guidance to support both the student and employer in work-based placement best practice.

This guide covers:

  • Types of work-based and placement learning opportunities
  • Responsibilities of employers, education providers and students
  • Guidance for assessments

This guidance will allow all parties involved to set clear expectations on what is offered and managed during work-based learning.

It will help you to better understand the several types of work-based and placement learning opportunities. The aim is that it will help you make informed choices about what you want from your placement. The guidance is a resource for everyone studying sport and physical activity to use.

Placement Agreements for Students in Sport (PASS)

Sportscotland have developed the Placement Agreements for Students in Sport (PASS) programme which aims to create clear mechanisms that can help to employers to offer valuable work-based placements for Scottish students in sport.

To do that, sportscotland are working with Scottish Student Sport, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), and a range of partners and institutions across the sport and education sectors.

The sportscotland Sport placements section and PASS tools aim to help students to get the most from the sporting system by guiding and sharing good practice and by informing and connecting placement opportunities.
